What Does it Mean to Be Saved?

What does it mean to be saved? I grew up hearing a lot of words in church that I did not understand and I wasn't bold enough to ask what they meant. One of those words was "saved" or often posed as a question, "Are you saved?" To be saved is to be rescued from something. In the context of the Bible, to be saved means to be rescued from sin. When we are saved, we are rescued from sin's penalty, sin's power, and, one day, sin's presence.
