Part 2 | By Grace Through Faith For Purpose
What does it actually mean to be "saved"? In Part 2 of this sermon, I unpack the true definition of grace and rescue using the gripping backstory of Mephibosheth. Because he was dropped as a child and crippled in both feet, he was completely unable to run, fight, or rescue himself. Ephesians tells us that spiritually, we are in an even more desperate state: we are completely dead in our sins, and a dead person cannot save themselves.
I reflect on a raw, sobering reminder I shared around Easter: we are all going to die, but do we have to perish? Join me, as we explore how a true gift can never be earned or bought. Think about it: if your parents made you pay for your Christmas presents, they wouldn't be gifts anymore! Watch now to discover how Jesus steps in to rescue us from the penalty and power of sin when we are completely helpless.
Questions for personal reflection or discussion:
Why do you think we naturally struggle to accept God’s grace as a completely free gift? In what practical ways do you find yourself trying to "earn" your standing with Him?
We learned that Mephibosheth was dropped as a child and left crippled in both feet, leaving him entirely unable to run, fight, or rescue himself. Our spiritual state is even more helpless. We were completely dead in our sins before Christ stepped in. Did it ever feel like you could fix your brokenness on your own, and how does acknowledging your utter helplessness change the way you praise God for your rescue?
We're all going to die, but we don’t have to perish. How does the ultimate truth of John 3:16 bring you comfort when confronting the reality of physical death, and how can you share that urgent hope with someone who is struggling with fear today?
The sermon breaks down how salvation rescues us from three distinct things: the penalty of sin, the power of sin in our daily lives, and the future presence of sin. While our eternal penalty is already paid, in what specific areas of your life do you currently need to experience rescue from the power of negative habits, anxiety, or temptation?
